NEVERMIND, IT'S AN INTERVIEW notes

Nevermind, It's An Interview - April 1992, By Kurt St. Thomas
One of Geffen's better moves was to release a fascinating promotional CD, Nevermind, It's An Interview, which features not only an extensive and forthcoming interview with the band, conducted by Kurt St. Thomas, and songs from both their Sub Pop and DGC catalogue, but also several rare live tracks drawn from the band's concert at the Paramount Theatre in SeattIe on Thursday, 31 October 1991 that remain exclusive to this item.

Kurt's interview material was recorded in St. Thomas's room at the Omni Hotel in New York City between 02:00 and 04:00, Sunday 12 January 1992, just a few hours after Nirvana's Saturday Night Live appearance. Also in attendance was Mark Kates, Nirvana's promotions man at Geffen, who had engineered the project. Chris and Dave's interview material was recorded over the following days.

After completing his interview, Kurt goes to his own room in the Omni Hotel, injects some China White heroin he has bought, and overdoses. Courtney Love, awakening unexpectedly at 07:00, finds and revives him. It is never ascertained whether Cobain's overdose was intentional or accidental, although on this occasion the latter seems likeliest.

The CD is divided into three tracks, each containing songs (some complete, some fragmentary) and interview. The interview pieces themselves have a fragmentary narrative - and reflect some less than exemplary editing - and so the transcription divides the subject sections up as best as possible. Where songs have been injected into the proceedings is noted, and also their source recording.
foot notes
A: The carnage Kurt and Dave are discussing at the beginning of the piece was the band's Saturday Night Live appearance of 11 January 1992.
B: Kurt St. Thomas is a DJ at WFNX of Boston. The independent station became the source of the world premiere broadcast of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' in mid-August 1991 (something of an irony, what with the song's riff bearing such a startling similarity to 'More Than A Feeling' by Boston, the group).
St. Thomas had possessed a copy of the song since back in June, and, long before cheerleader videos had hit MTV screens (or indeed been filmed), declared 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' would "change the face of music' (on 29 August 1991, reminiscent of Kenny Everett with Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band in 1967, St. Thomas plays Nevermind from beginning to end on his show, marking the album's world premiere.
C: Paul Stanley (b. Stanley Eisen) is guitarist with KISS.
